The navigation layer
for modern airports.

Every year, millions of passengers miss their flights — not because of delays, but because airports are getting bigger and harder to navigate. GateFlow exists to change that: stress-free navigation from check-in to gate, for every traveler, at every terminal.

What people say.

"

I once missed a connecting flight simply because I couldn't find the gate in time. The terminal felt like a maze, and by the time I figured it out it was too late. When I tried GateFlow during the beta test, I reached my gate much faster than I ever had before. I genuinely didn't expect it to make that much of a difference.

Terminals keep growing — and passenger numbers with them. The orientation problem GateFlow is addressing isn't a niche issue. It affects millions of people every single day. What's surprising is that no one tackled it seriously before.

What makes GateFlow interesting from a business perspective is the model itself — free for the traveler, valuable for the operator. They've turned a navigation problem into a data layer. That's a much bigger opportunity than it first appears.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers miss their flights every year — not because of delays, but because of poor wayfinding. The infrastructure investment in terminals is enormous, but guidance systems were always an afterthought. GateFlow changes that.

About GateFlow

We help travelers find their way.

GateFlow develops indoor navigation for airports. Using Bluetooth Low Energy beacons, we turn large, confusing terminals into spaces travelers can move through with confidence — guiding every passenger quickly and stress-free from check-in to gate. As a B2B platform, we help airports deliver a smoother, calmer journey, while the app stays free for travelers.

Our journey

The GateFlow team

GateFlow was founded in Munich in 2022 by Luca Scheel and five co-founders from software engineering, data science, aviation operations and design — united by one frustration everyone knows: airports are big, confusing and stressful.

Since then we've built our own Bluetooth beacon hardware and a real-time indoor positioning engine — and brought them together in a live pilot at Munich Airport. From our headquarters in Grünwald, with teams in Munich and Berlin, we're working toward making every terminal easy to navigate.

2022

Foundation

GateFlow is founded in Munich by Luca Scheel and five co-founders. The idea: a beacon-based indoor navigation layer that finally makes airport terminals easy to move through.

2023

First prototype

We build our first Bluetooth Low Energy beacon prototype and the real-time indoor positioning engine behind it, and start the first conversations with airport operators.

2024

Positioning & pilot preparation

We refine our real-time indoor positioning and turn-by-turn navigation, grow the team across Grünwald, Munich and Berlin, and prepare our first terminal pilot.

2025

Munich pilot goes live

The first passengers navigate a terminal with GateFlow at our Munich pilot site — turning real movement into the data that makes the product better.

2026

Scaling up

A next-generation beacon enters field testing, we begin early talks with regional airport operators across the DACH region, and present GateFlow at the Aviation Innovation Summit Berlin.

Making airports easy — from Munich to the world.

GateFlow is built in Germany, for one of the most demanding environments there is: a busy airport terminal. By combining our own beacon hardware with privacy-by-design analytics, we help airports give every traveler a calmer, more confident journey from check-in to gate.

We're still early — and that's exactly why it's a great time to join. The earlier you're part of GateFlow, the more you help define what it becomes.

Join us on our mission.

We're always looking for people who want to shape the future of airport navigation.

Technology

How GateFlow gets you from
A to B.

Our navigation runs on a dense network of Bluetooth Low Energy beacons placed throughout the terminal. They broadcast tiny signals that let the app know exactly where you are — and the quickest way to your gate.

How it works

GateFlow turns invisible Bluetooth signals into a live route to your gate. Behind the scenes it's a simple four-step loop that repeats as you move through the terminal.

From beacon signal to a route on your phone
1

Beacons broadcast

Beacons across the terminal send out a constant BLE signal.

2

Your phone listens

The app hears the nearby beacons and measures each signal — no pairing or login.

3

Route is calculated

It pinpoints you, then the algorithm computes the shortest path to your gate.

4

Guided to your gate

Turn-by-turn directions update live as you walk.

What is a Bluetooth beacon?

A beacon is a small, wireless, battery-powered device — roughly the size of a smoke detector. It does one thing extremely well, in three steps:

Transmit. It repeatedly sends a tiny BLE signal carrying its unique ID.

Detect. Any nearby phone with Bluetooth on can hear it — no app pairing.

Locate. The app reads several beacons together and turns them into your position.

  • Precise indoor positioning, down to a few metres
  • Real-time — your dot moves as you move
  • Very low energy — years of battery per beacon
  • Works fully offline

Why Bluetooth beacons — and not WiFi or GPS

Indoors, the obvious options fall short. Here's how the alternatives compare.

Satellite

GPS

Great outdoors, lost indoors. Satellite signals barely get through terminal roofs and steel, so GPS drifts by tens of metres or cuts out entirely. Fine for the motorway — useless for finding gate B27.

Wireless network

WiFi positioning

Access points are built for internet coverage, not location. Their signal swings as crowds move, the phone must scan constantly (draining the battery), and phone makers increasingly restrict WiFi scanning for privacy. Accuracy is usually 5–15 m — enough to lose you between two gates.

GateFlow

Bluetooth beacons

Purpose-built for positioning. We place and calibrate beacons exactly where accuracy matters, they sip power, broadcast without any pairing, and stay accurate to a few metres even in a packed hall — and it all works offline.

~1–3 m accuracy indoorsNo pairing or loginWorks offlineStable in crowds
GateFlow turn-by-turn navigation on a phone in a terminal

Guided from A to B, right across the terminal

From the moment you arrive, GateFlow guides you step by step. Our routing engine keeps tuning the path — live re-routing if you take a wrong turn, step-free options, level changes via lifts and escalators, and a real-time estimate of how long it'll take to reach your gate.

Why airports choose GateFlow

A navigation layer that's accurate, calm and easy to run — built specifically for the realities of a busy terminal.

A few metres accurate

Reliable positioning, even in packed halls.

Works offline

Core navigation keeps working without a network.

Privacy-friendly

No personal data stored; positioning runs on the phone.

Low-maintenance

Wireless beacons with years of battery life.

Already building the third generation

We design the navigation system in-house and work with specialist hardware partners on our beacons — currently the third generation of our BLE hardware. The goal: cover more terminal with fewer devices, and make each one last longer.

Wider spacing

A cleaner, stronger signal lets beacons sit further apart while keeping accuracy — fewer units to cover the same space.

Higher efficiency

More positioning per milliwatt. The new generation does more with less energy.

More capacity

Each beacon handles the signal load of peak-hour crowds without losing precision.

Longer life

Smarter power management stretches battery life and maintenance cycles.
